Spring, My Favorite Time of Year

I always look so forward to the first spring flowers, it is like a little promise of things to come.  A few days ago the first flowers in my yard started to make their grand appearance.  The sweet, humble little crocus, heralds in the new season.

I have decided that I don’t have near enough of them around.

This next fall, I am going to add a few HUNDRED more, I love them so much.

What is your favorite part of spring?

There Is Hope

I think I have about had it with this winter.
First, lots of snow
then, lots of smog and fog
now, subzero temperatures.
All while battling morning sickness and pregnancy fatigue.

I think that bears have the right idea, go to sleep during the pretty colors of autumn, and wake up the first part of spring, skip winter altogether!

As I was sitting at my kitchen table writing blog posts and skimming through pictures on my computer I came across some pictures I took this past spring and summer.  It was like a breath of promise and hope…this winter will not last forever!  Not only will there be green, and colors and my vegetable garden again, there will be a new baby, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to this year, so no more gloom for me, only looking forward.

I thought I would share some of my nuggets of hope.

Sharing

Every year I plant big sunflowers all over my yard.  I love to find little places to tuck them in, and when August comes I have bright yellow sunflowers all everywhere.  Some sunflowers are decorative, meaning the seeds are too small to harvest, the wild sunflowers that grow around here are like that.  I also plant big sunflowers that have nice heads that produce seeds that are big enough to harvest and eat.
I have never actually harvested the seeds for us people type to eat, I give them to the animals.  The chicken love to peck the seeds out of the head, and then I don’t have to try to do it myself.  When the flower heads get big and bend over, and the backs start to turn yellow it is time to cut  and dry.  Once they are dry I will throw heads into the coop for the chickens.

However….

I have to leave a few heads for my little birdies.  This year I grew sunflowers along the grape trellises and the birds have found that the posts make perfect little perches for picking at the sunflower seeds.

I get to watch these sweet little birds from my kitchen window, as they peck away at my sunflowers.  I have plenty of flowers in other places that I will harvest, I think these will stay right were they are for the little birdies.
