Lent: 40 Garbage Bags in 40 Days

I have never done (or would the right word be celebrate?) Lent before, but this year I am going to do it.  I got the idea for Lent here: http://www.memoriesoncloverlane.com/2011/03/one-week-from-now-40-bags-40-days.html

Basically you fill a garbage bag a day for the 40 days of Lent, and either throw it out or donate it to charity.  I am excited, there is plenty for me to throw out or give away and to work a garbage bag at a time sounds very do-able.  The only modification I will make is that Sunday I will not be cleaning out anything, Sunday is a day of rest where we only do the work necessary, so I will do two bags on Saturday.

Do you celebrate Lent?  What do you do?

  1. I grew up in a church where we didn’t celebrate Lent, but as an adult I attended a couple of churches that did and so I celebrate both Lent and Advent now.
This year, for Lent, I am trying to cut way back on watching news and political stuff on TV as it makes me focus more on the world rather than on God…and besides the current politics of our country make me angry, sad, stressed out and crazy:)
I’m also changing my diet, mostly for health reasons, but I am using the season of Lent to do this.
I like your idea of getting rid of the excess–can you come ‘play’ at my house when you’re done??? Either that or wish me the discipline to do the same here:)
    Blessings,
    Aimee

    • My religion doesn’t celebrate Lent either, but I thought it sounded like something that would be good to do.
